Happy Homemaker Monday 5th January 2026

Happy New Year everyone! Hope that 2026 holds lots of blessings and good things for you.

We had a very relaxing Christmas, eventually. I was sick for so long and ended up with a bad sinus infection and had some awful antibiotics. But I'm pretty much over it now, although I do still wake up with a very husky voice LOL. I was finally in the land of the living by 23rd of December and then it was manic trying to get everything ready for Christmas!!

Anyway, onto Happy Homemaker Monday.

The weather

We've had snow! I love snow, except when I have to drive on it.

It's currently -5 C and quite clear. Been very chilly all day. It's evening now. We had a beautiful sunset.

Right now I am

Sitting writing this, thinking about what to have for tea (evening meal). L has just offered to make us a chilli, so that sounds good!

Thinking and pondering

About the weather and whether I'll be able to get to work tomorrow. We are quite hilly round here and my car isn't good for all weather driving. Various forecasts have rain, a bit of snow, a lot of snow or nothing, so who knows??

How I am feeling

OK, a bit tired today as I was up at 6 am for work after a Christmas break. Need to get back into the swing of things.

On the breakfast & lunch plate

For breakfast I had strawberries, walnuts, sultanas, oats and yogurt. For lunch I had leftover goats cheese and leek risotto.

What I am wearing

Many layers of clothes! Dungarees and a green cardigan.

On my reading pile

  • The Confident Woman - Joyce Meyer
  • The Dose Effect - TJ Power
  • The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson
  • I've started a year through the Bible plan. I'm up to Genesis 18.

On my TV this week

  • Currently L is watching old 80s bands on YouTube
  • Before that we were watching a YouTube channel called Outdoor boys. Does sort of bushcraft type videos. In this video he was kayaking in a very cold place, before that he was building a shelter in the snow and building a giant fire. Fascinating.
  • We completed the Stranger Things series, soooo good. One of my favourites.

Something fun to share

The Outdoor Boys channel I just mentioned: https://www.youtube.com/@OutdoorBoys Well worth a visit!

Looking around the house

I've just cleaned the kitchen. I need to declutter the living room and my bedroom. Things got a bit chaotic with me being ill for so long and then Christmas.

To do list for the week

  • Clean throughout house now that decorations are down
  • Get some exercise back into my life

From the camera

Not the best picture because I took it with my phone, but the moon had a rainbow halo around it a couple of nights ago. So beautiful.

Devotional, prayers, Bible verses

From the Glorify app today:

Devotional on Isaiah 41:8-10

"Within two verses, God speaks ten identity-shaping truths over His insecure and wayward people:

I have chosen you.
I have taken you in.
I have called you.
I have told you, "You are my servant, serving on my side."
I have not rejected you.
I am with you.
I am your God.
I will strengthen you.
I will help you.
I will uphold you.

... notice how these statements stretch across time, past, present and future...It's a personal reminder: God holds your story, yesterday, today and every tomorrow. Nothing is outside of his power."

Have a beautiful day and week!

Happy Homemaker Monday

Happy Monday everyone!

The weather

It's sunny! Woo hoo!

Right now I am

Resting up still, sat on the sofa eating cherries and drinking honey and lime juice, waiting for this interminable flu to end. I am so ready to feel health again. The fevers have totally gone but now just congestion and an awful cough. But rest is the answer.

Thinking and pondering

How annoying it is that I can't do all the things I want to do! I missed Bookclub yesterday and I was very mad about that. There are so many jobs around the house I want to do and in the garden. But sometimes God allows illness to force us to rest, so I'm tryyyyyying to be good 😂

How I am feeling

Positive, despite the icky flu. Gotta stay cheerful people. Speak positivity to yourself.

On the breakfast & lunch plate

Blackberries, walnuts, oats, dried cranberries and sultanas with yogurt.

Probably going to have falafels with houmous and guacamole and a bit of salad.

What I am wearing

Still in my jammies...but I have nowhere to go so why not? 😂

On my reading pile

A Christmas Resolution by Anne Perry

The Confident Woman by Joyce Meyer

On my TV this week

  • Better Watch Out (the twist in this film 😱)
  • Die Hard
  • National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
  • Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team

Something fun to share

Look at what the Home Alone House looks like now!! Wow. I'm a maximalist kinda gal, so I actually prefer the 90s look LOL. Seen at @architectanddesign on Instagram.

Looking around the house

Working on cleaning the shower.

To do list for the week

  • I need to do a grocery shop
  • Going to try and take it slow, which is so hard I have so much to do!! Breathhhhhhhe haha

From the camera

Keeping me company while I've been sick 🩷

Devotional, prayers, Bible verses

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen

The night has passed, and the day lies open before us;
let us prayer with one heart and mind.

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever.
Amen.

Morning prayer, Advent, Monday, 8 December 2025.

Have a beautiful day and week!

Happy Homemaker Monday - Except it's Tuesday!!

I sat down to write this post, my first blog in MONTHS. I went across to Sandra's blog and saw that she'd put that the 1st of December was Monday. And I looked at my date and it said 2nd December. I was confused for a good few minutes until it dawned on me. It's not Monday, it's Tuesday!!

In my defence I have just had an awful bout of flu so I'm not sure what day of the week it is.

Join Sandra and others for Happy Homemaker Monday at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom - who all no doubt did their post on a Monday haha.

The weather

It's been raaaaaainy recently, but looking at the forecast it's going to ease off today.

Right now I am

Sitting up in bed with a coffee, thankful that I haven't woken up with a fever. Thank goodness, this has been a rotten bout of flu. Our eldest, B, recently started a job in a school and she'd only been there a couple of weeks when she was hit with this flu bug. Poor thing. She had to ring the headteacher to explain, and missed some important training. So I'm hoping that they won't see this as a negative - but it can't be helped. If you're ill, you're ill.

Thinking and pondering

A friend of mine who is going through the most awful time.

Whether I am going to have the energy to do any housework today. I have a pile of laundry as high as the sky.

Going to find the cat, she has disappeared and is very quiet, so I am suspicious she is up to something naughty! 😂

How I am feeling

A bit discombobulated to be honest. I have a lot to think about at the minute - my family, my health, my job. I'm really looking forward to Christmas. I can't wait to decorate now. We have done our Christmas tradition of each choosing a new ornament/decoration. I want some new lights. But we'll see what we have

On the breakfast plate

I'm thinking banana, raisins, yogurt, oats and bran.

No idea about lunch and dinner, G and L have been taking care of food while B and I have been sick.

What I am wearing

My jammies.

On my reading pile

I've just finished The List of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey. It was my bookclub book for this month and I really enjoyed it. Gave it 4.5 stars (out of 5) on Goodreads.

On my TV this week

I have watched a LOT of TV on my laptop in bed this past few days.

  • America's Sweethearts
  • Stranger Things Season 5
  • Last Christmas
  • Falling for Christmas
  • The Holdovers
  • Signs
  • Fit for TV - the Reality of the Biggest Loser

Something fun to share

This is such a heartwarming video: Nick's Garden Rescue. Nick is an elderly veteran who is isolated and lonely and unable to take care of a jungle of a garden. They sort out his garden and get him a car. It's just the sweetest thing.

The world can seem such a dark place, but there are more people who care than those who are horrid. The news over-reports negativity and drama because anger and fear makes people read more than heartwarming stuff or encouragement (that's why rage-bait is a thing on the internet). It's human nature, we all remember so clearly those times that people have been mean to us, but easily forget the compliments and the kindness. It's the same with the news, we gravitate towards the drama. But keep looking for the kindness and the things that are beautiful. Fill your mind and heart with the good stuff.

Looking around the house

The house desperately needs a tidy and a clean, but we'll see how well I feel later.

To do list for the week

  • Laundry
  • Clean & tidy
  • Think about Christmas shopping (I've barely even thought about it!!)
  • Decorate for Christmas - woo hoooooo

From the camera

Devotional, prayers, Bible verses

Come, Lord, Come to us.

Enter our darkness with your light,

Fill our emptiness with your presence, come refresh, restore, renew us.

In our sadness, come as joy,

In our troubles, come as peace,

In our fearfulness, come as hope,

In our darkness, come as light,

In our frailty, come as strength,

In our loneliness, come as love. Come refresh, restore, renew us.

Have a beautiful day and week!

Happy Days and Happy Homemaker Monday - 19th May 2025

Look at that sky! Beautiful

Good morning! It's been a while. Things have been busy. The weather has been beautiful and I have been feverishly working in the garden. Clearing weeds and planting some flowers. Living as we do in the shadow of the Pennines where the rain likes to settle you have to make the best of the dry weather. It has been GLORIOUS. In fact, it's been so sunny for so long that I can't believe that I am praying for a bit of rain. My front lawn is turning brown! It's cloudier today and there is a slight chance of rain, so you never know.

We've also been on a few lovely walks locally, and places where it is usually so muddy has been bone dry, even dusty.

Don't you think this tree looks a bit like it's shouting into the wind with the branches like its hair blowing behind?

I've also made it to the final week 9 of the Couch to 5K programme. I am so proud of myself. I think I will stick to running twice a week (the programme has you running 3 times a week but I'm not a huge fan of running). My plan is to maybe supplement the runs with some swimming and going to the gym with my husband because I can go once a week with him as a guest on his subscription plan. At nearly 52 it was so hard to get into the running and I am still very slow but I feel much better and have lost a little belly fat too, which is good.

L, my youngest, has finally submitted all her assignments for her degree course at university. So it's just waiting for marking to be completed and then graduation in July!! She's bored already haha! But her boyfriend is visiting and then she's off down south to go to a football event (he's on a Sunday team) so that will keep her occupied for a while. B is off to Rome in Italy soon. A friend from the USA is visiting there so she will meet them there for a couple of nights. They are going to visit the Vatican as part of the trip.

Oh our oven decided to blow the electric this weekend. We got the electric back on but the oven is broken. We've had it for 11 years(ish) now so we've got a new one coming next weekend. Praise God for air fryers!! I could cook my salmon in there yesterday, and it came out nicely.

This afternoon B and I are going to the cinema to watch Thunderbolts which is a Marvel film. Should be fun.

Anyway, let's get onto Happy Homemaker Monday, hosted by Sandra at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom.

The weather in my neck of the woods:

I bet I'll be complaining about the rain by Sunday! 😂

As I look outside my window:

It's actually cloudy. A few breaks in the clouds. I can hear birdsong, which is such a summery sound. Today I've heard robins, wrens, willow warblers, blackcaps, blackbirds, chaffinches and chiff chaffs. Such lovely sounds.

Right now I am:

Sitting on the bed typing this up. It's 11:42 am here. So far today I've taken B to her volunteer role at a local animal shelter, had breakfast, done a bit of Bible study and read my book, then walked to meet her its a lovely walk through the country footpaths.

Something fun to share:

This post about gardening and friendship by Ryanne Molinari. It's so true, when you're pulling up weeds and working with living growing things it makes you ponder deep things. Like as I was pulling up some weeds some of my plants were being pulled out with them and it made me think of the Parable of the Tares (Weeds) in Matthew 13:24-43. Good friendship helps us pull out the weeds in our lives and their support network helps us not get pulled out too. Click on the image below for the link.

Also YouTube videos by Peter Santenello. He travels round the USA and makes videos as he chats to various people. I've watched one about Deep Appalachia and another at the US/Mexico Border with Arizona Sheriff. It's really interesting seeing other people's lives and perspectives. Really talking to people and not just hearing opinions in the news or on social media.

Thinking and pondering:

How hungry I am! I've been really hungry the past few days, like ravenous. I have phases like that. No doubt it's some kind of hormonal fluctuation like everything seems to be at my age haha!

I'm also pondering the things I need to do today. I need to do a post weekend house reset - tidy and quick clean round. I've washed my bedding and will hang it out after finishing this post. Then it will be past 12 noon, which I feel is an acceptable time to think about lunch 😂😂

On my bedside table:

Eyedrops, a pile of books, my diary, lavendar essential oil and coconut body cream.

On my TV:

Rewatching The Office (USA version). IT Crowd (British comedy from the 1990s) - just finished it. Season 1 of NCIS. Good American Family.

Listening to:

Birds chirping outside. Coco (our cat) washing herself - she licks so loudly! haha

On the menu for this week:

Monday: Lentil curry

Tuesday: Tuna pasta.

Wednesday: Chicken burgers.

Thursday: not sure, we are at a church event so it'll be something quick and easy.

Friday: Pizza, if I can get the top oven working, not sure if that one is broken too.

Saturday: don't know

Sunday: don't know

On my to do list:

Hang out bedding.

Go to cinema.

Tidy and clean house.

Maybe gardening if I have time - but at least water pots and hanging basket.

On my reading pile:

Tangled Web by LM Montgomery.

Currently in Job in my Bible reading plan.

Letters of CS Lewis.

My simple pleasure:

The smell of washed clothes/bedding after it's been hung outside to dry. It smells so much better than if it's dried indoors or in a dryer.

Looking around the house:

I need to paint the new doors G has hung. But the weather has been too nice for indoor work!

From the camera:

We went to see How to Train Your Dragon with a Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra playing the music. It was AMAZING. Absolutely wonderful. If you see a similar thing being done in your neck of the woods, go! You won't regret it.

Bible verse, devotional:

"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 22:36-40

I was thinking about this in church yesterday. We had a visiting preacher and he was talking about grace. He gave an example, what would you say to a man who was drunk every day of the week and was unkind to his wife, but who said to you that it was OK because God forgave him because of grace?

There are many things you could say to this man, but it set me off thinking about the Matthew verse above. God is our father, a good father loves us. He doesn't want us drunk because alcohol in excess is so damaging to our health and behaviour. Any good parent wants the best for their children and it really hurts us when our children engage in self-destructive behaviour. Therefore to drink to excess is not loving towards God. And the way he was treating his wife was not loving towards her - he was mistreating someone who was nearer than a neighbour. So he was breaking the two commandments on which everything else hangs. Love God. Love people. We don't have grace from God so we can extra-sin, we have grace from God because of Jesus, because he loves us, wants the best for us, and hopefully that love which God has given in abundance would overflow from us so that our lives would be one of loving God and loving others. That should be our prayer...not 'how much can I get away with because of grace'.

I guess that might be a bit garbled, but that's where my mind went.

Have a lovely week.

Sarah xx

To always check how long your daughter is coming home from university!! So we filled up the car with washing baskets and bin bags and carrier bags of her things 😂

Looking around the house....

Needs a bit of a clean. I haven't had chance today. I dropped B off at her volunteer job this morning. Came home, had my breakfast and watched some Stranger Things while the food settled. Did one of my week 4 Couch to 5K runs. Came home. Showered. Then B rang to say that my mum and dad wanted to go out to lunch, so we did that. Afterwards mum and dad came in our house to chat for a bit. They went home and now it's 5:45 pm and I don't know where the day went!!

From the camera....

Lovely daffodils from G for Mother's Day:

Happy Homemaker Monday - 3rd March 2025

Come join Diary of a SAHM for Happy Homemaker Monday

The weather.....

We've had a nice few days. On Friday I spent time with my mum sat in her garden! It was lovely to feel the warmth of the sun on my face.

As I look outside my window...

It's cloudy but bright. I've just walked to meet with B after her shift at an animal shelter that she volunteers at. I'm absolutely shattered. I've been taken off HRT for a while while I have some health tests run and it's really messed with my sleep. I am struggling to get to sleep before 4am. So getting out in the natural light and fresh air is good. I've also started couch to 5K on the NHS app...my legs are sore!

Lovely oak tree - isn't he handsome?

I don’t know what lies around the bend [in the road], but I’m going to believe that the best does - Anne of Green Gables

Right now I am....

Listening to the tumble dryer - too tired to faff with washing today lol. B chatting to me as I type.

Something fun to share (a blog, a video, a tip)...

The Merlin bird app is fun, totally recommend. As soon as you hear bird song set it to listen and it will tell you which birds are around. Today on my walk I listened to skylarks, blue tits and robins. Robins have a very pretty birdsong.

Thinking and pondering...

Not being able to sleep!

On my reading pile....

Just finished Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. Next read is From Venice with Love by Rosanna Ley. I've never read this author before but the book cover looked very summery so I picked it up at the library.

On my TV.....

Just watched episode 7 of season 2 Severance! INTRIGUING!! We watched some old Malcolm in the Middle this weekend. A film called Elevation, which was fun. Still working through Modern Family too.

Listening to....

The tumble dryer. I listened to a running playlist on Spotify yesterday - full of thumping good tunes :). I'm quite enjoying The Temperance Movement band at the moment (British blues/rock band).

On the menu for this week....

Monday: Pasta with tomato sauce, parmasan and some bacon that needs using up.
Tuesday: Lentil coconut curry
Wednesday: Tofu with something... lol I'm not very planned this week.
Thursday: Turkey pasta
Friday: Pizza night
Saturday: dunno
Sunday: dunno

On my to do list....

I literally have no energy due to lack of sleep. But I've put a load of washing on. Cleaned out Coco's litter trays. Done a quick clean of the sink and toilet in the bathroom. I need to do our weekly shop and I'm going to pop over to mum and dad's for a brew as a letter has come from mum's consultant that dad wants me to look at. Main item on list: SLEEP!!

Happening this week....

Not a lot to be honest. We had a lovely weekend. After a library visit we went out for the afternoon with L & B as L was visiting from uni on Saturday - always lovely to see her.  Sunday we had a chilled day at home. Tuesday I have a docs appointment. I usually do mum and dad's cleaning on a Thursday. Next weekend we have a 50th birthday party to go. But that's about it... I think.

My simple pleasure....

Playing with Coco, she has a couple of mad half hours during the day. We have laminate floor down in the hallway and when she's running on that it's like she's in a cartoon running on the spot haha. She loves to chase an old ribbon - all the expensive cat toys we've bought and she prefers an old ribbon 😂

Lesson learned the past week....

How much I love sleep!! I may have mentioned my recent sleep issue already a million times haha.

Looking around the house....

Just a bit of tidying. The kitchen needs sorting and the dishwasher emptying, but otherwise it's not too bad.

From the camera....

Lovely sunset from the hills looking down towards the town

On my prayer list.....

Mum and dad and mum's health issues. For me not to be awake until 4am!

Bible verse, Devotional....

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 2 Corinthians 13:14

Right now I am....

Making lunch and watching Modern Family.

Something fun to share (a blog, a video, a tip)...

This bus stop in Fowey 💕 the locals decorate it, it's so cute.

Thinking and pondering...

That despite the negativity in the news there are kind, generous people everywhere.

On my reading pile....

The Secrets of Hartwood Hall by Katie Lumsden.
I've just finished Anxious People buy Fredrik Backman - he apparently wrote the book that inspired the Tom Hanks film A Man Called Otto which I LOVED.

On my TV.....

Modern Family, season 2
Severance - we are ADDICTED haha
Revenge of the Pink Panther film

Listening to....

Modern Family and the hum of the oven.

Grocery shopping, quick clean of the house, laundry, piano practice.

Happening this week....

Not a lot really. Cleaning mum and dad's this week, will probably take mum out for lunch and B has dentist on Friday.

My simple pleasure....

Watching reruns of my favourite TV shows (recently Modern Family and IT Crowd) or watching old films.

Lesson learned the past week....

This is kind of not a lesson as such but a random piece of information. The earth's rotation is slowing down by 1.8 seconds every 100 years.

Looking around the house....

It's a bit messy - ready for my Monday reset. But I can see Coco sunning herself, some beautiful roses that G bought me and blue skies out of the window.

From the camera....

I love this tree LOL

On my prayer list.....

L at university. My mum and dad - mum's health and dad as he takes on the bulk of her care. G as he recovers from being ill for the past couple of weeks.

Bible verse, Devotional....

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

Have a lovely week
