Wow, a sit down and cup of tea.
Lovely...so what have you done today? I'll tell you alllll about my day. :)
My day has been busy but productive. I cleaned Grandma's flat today, it is sooooo hot in there. She lives in terror of "THEM WASPS" (the 'a' pronounced as in 'apple' lol), bless her, so the windows are only open the tiniest crack. I was rather perspiring somewhat, but it's had a right good clean. I was a bit naughty whilst she showered I opened all the windows wide for a bit to let some air in.
I've been so busy catching up on cleaning at home too. But it's time for a sit down before I make tea (evening meal tea I mean).
I'll tell you it's lovely here right now, the sun is tempered by a haze, there's a lovely breeze and I can hear the beautiful tones of Kate Rusby ringing out (on the stereo she's not in my kitchen or anything).
You Belong to Me by Kate Rusby:
...oh, and I can also hear Chatterbox annoying Squidge by yelling the tune to Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by Bach at the top of her voice upstairs, LOL.
This evening we are going to see Despicable Me 2 tonight at the cinema with a couple of friends from church. I love Gru, really looking forward to it.
Hugs.

Another bend in the road...
![]() |
| From Flickr |
Well, I'm so excited! It's a new beginning. Another bend in the road, if you will.
As of today, I'm no longer an employee of anywhere except my family (LOL). Our family has had a hard past year and we made the decision that it would be better for all if I could stop work and just concentrate on family things. So, I'm now going to help Mum care for Grandma and just look after my family for now. It was a scary decision, I had a great job at a school, but it needed to be done and I am so grateful that we are in a position that I am able to do this.
I would be grateful for your prayers for my husband, who has found out he has some health problems, for my Mum who has had some health issues, for my wider family too...and for me too, I'm so fatigued with all the stress and a busy job and family...etc.
Here's to family!
Hugs.

For ye are living poems...
Come to me, O ye children!
And whisper in my ear
What the birds and the winds are singing
In your sunny atmosphere.
For what are all our contrivings,
And the wisdom of our books,
When compared with your caresses,
And the gladness of your looks?
Ye are better than all the ballads
That ever were sung or said;
For ye are living poems,
And all the rest are dead.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Oh I do so love Longfellow...
The reason I post this poem is because I read an interesting BBC article about procuring happiness and those things which researchers have determined cause us humans most happiness. I concurred with most of the article until I came to this part:
Having children lowers your happiness levels, but your happiness increases when they grow up and leave home.
Shocking. I wonder why? From the very day they were born my children have brought me the most joy. Honestly, I never knew such consuming love before. The moment my first child was born I was overwhelmed. Joy doesn't even describe it. Basically, they make me unbelievably happy.
I am confused. I wonder why so many are made less happy by their children?
I rather think it is not children that cause unhappiness for people, I think it is selfishness. Many people today have bought into the lie that in order to be happy you need oodles of money (something children eat-up at an alarming rate), you need oodles of leisure time (something that children have a lot of but parents have very little), and you need a high flying career (something that is certainly made less easy by the birth of a very small and demanding personage)...and of course if you can be visibly socially and politically active too even better (you don't get much praise for that meal you cooked again for your family and the toilet floor you just cleaned because one of them missed the bowl again!).
It is also remarkable that I should read this today after watching a short performance by the In Yer Face theatre company at the Urban Hero Awards last night. The skit concerned a middle-class couple who, because of high earnings, had lost their Child Benefit. Due to this loss of income the couple had decided to sell their child on eBay because he was no longer a lucrative investment. It was funny, but with an important point. Society today treats children today like a commodity. But here's the truth, if you have a child they are your responsibility - not the government, not the school, not the rest of the world - your child is your responsibility.
If you have a child, you are responsible to feed them, clothe them and keep them safe; these are the basic needs of any human being. But being a parent carries an extra responsibility, one which often determines the life course your child will follow - you are responsible to love that child with an unconditional, undistracted, unselfish love.
We all fail in some way as parents, I fail regularly. I get frustrated by my children, I get cross at them, and sometimes I really, really don't want to get up off my chair and play a game with them when actually I want to play another game of Bejeweled on my phone! *ahem* But this attitude is wrong and every parent should fight against it in themselves. None of us are perfect, but the overwhelming urge in every parent should be to love their children unconditionally and constantly. Deep down we all know this, that is why our selfishness makes us so unhappy, because every human has that heavenly spark within them that is doused and quenched when we treat another person as less important than ourselves. The serpent's deception causes us to blame our children for that unhappiness.
But from the very beginning, God has sung a different song, a Psalmody of love.
He gives the barren woman a home, making her the joyous mother of children.Praise the LORD! ~Psalm 113:9
Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate. ~Psalm 127:3-5
For God, every human from the very moment of conception, and even before, are precious in His sight:
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. ~Psalm 139:13-15
God created us with this deep within us, the knowledge that just as we are precious in His sight, so are our children. And yet His voice is often drowned out by the sinister lies of the serpent.
Children are a gift, a precious gift. They are like tiny seeds planted in our lives. They need nurture and care so that they grow straight and tall. If we treat them like inconvenient annoyances that frustrate our every turn they will grow stunted and bent. Weighed down by our words, our behaviour, and our countenances, they too will seek happiness in places that they will find neither peace nor joy but only pain, despair, and destructiveness.
For they are living poems and each day another line is added to the poetry of their lives.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. ~Psalm 139:16

A tour around my garden
Some close ups of some of my lovely flowers. Warning there are a LOT of pictures! I'm really enjoying the garden this year.
I must point out that these are close ups because if I do wider shots you might just see the weedy bits of the garden and we can't have that can we?! :) Plus, I broke the lawnmower and I am sure I saw some gazelle in the resulting long grass the other day, I wouldn't want to scare them off with my camera flash. However, the gazelle might attract lions, then poachers...perhaps I need to borrow a lawnmower off someone.
One day my garden will be splendid enough for a wide-angle photo...that's if it hasn't been decimated by the hunters and tourists on safari. :P

| I planted this in its pot a few years ago, it blooms wonderfully, but I think it needs re-potting once it's finished flowering. |

| One of my flower beds - pansies everywhere in my garden. :) |

| Look at the lovely huge pansies - the area behind has just recently been dug out and planted, it was all overgrown. |

| Another picture of the area we recently cleared. There are flowers other than pansies here - you can just see the edge of a Dahlia to the left! LOL |

| There was a bit of a gap under the fence next-door put in next to our drive, just added a bit of extra soil and planted some flowers....lovely! |

Beautiful simplicity
As I hung the washing out this morning using my Nan's old wooden pegs, I thought about all those years she spent hanging out her washing. Her children's (my dad and my auntie) baby clothes and nappies, Granddad's shirts and trousers, her skirts and tights, their sheets and blankets. All those years serving her family and her husband. Then I remembered my Granddad, after she'd died, struggling to hang out the washing, struggling on his unresponsive legs. Refusing help. Such a lonely figure, determined to carry on. Rigging up a pulley system so that he could hang out the washing sat down. Anything to prolong his independence. He's in a nursing home now, someone else does his laundry. All he has now are his memories of his beloved wife, and of course he still has his children and grandchildren who love him very much.
It was sad and beautiful all at the same time. I must admit I filled up a bit, and my eyes are filling now. Memories are our anchor to the past, the things that make us who we are, our link to the beloved ones in our lives. These pegs may just be bits of wood, but they make me remember and be glad for the blessing of family, of serving, and the simple things of life.
I treasure my bag of wooden pegs.

Meter cupboard make-over
I'll wager not many statuses ...sorry posts (obviously in Facebook mode LOL)...have that as a title! :)

| There were some ugly self-adhesive towel holders on the meter cupboard in the kitchen, so I decided to pull them off. Bad idea! It took a load of paint with it. |
![]() |
| So I made it all pretty, lol. The sign says, 'Where there's smoke, you'll find me cooking dinner'. I now have a place to hang my apron and tea-towel. :) |

Blessed!
So pleased. My granddad has decided sell his house and he has allowed me to keep some things! I was totally bowled over that he would allow me to keep all these things.
Most of all I love that these things are not only beautiful but are filled with memories. Things to be treasured.
Firstly, the paintings. These are all by my nan. Those who have read my blog for a while know that Nan passed away in November 2010. She and my granddad loved to draw and paint. I've been given a number of Nan's paintings. Here they are. Sorry the photos aren't that great, they were taken with my phone camera and they have flash-reflection off the glass.
I also got a pretty vase, some pretty drinking glasses, and an amazing marble chess set that I am too scared to put out in case the cat or the children knock it over! LOL.
So, so happy. Such good memories and such pretty things.
Have a great week.

| I've had this one for a while, but thought I'd share :) |

| Also had for a while. |
![]() |
| Isn't this just beautiful? |
![]() |
| This is a small picture, I think it's quite clever. |
![]() |
| Nice farmyard picture. It wasn't in a frame, so I found a frame I think suits it nicely. |
![]() |
| I've had this one for a while, Nan didn't like it. I'm not sure why. I love it of course. |
![]() |
| I'm going to have to ask Granddad where she painted these pictures. This one is quite interesting. |
![]() |
| This one is in cellophane. I'll have to find a frame. |
![]() |
| Squidge has chosen this one for her room. It is already framed, so it already hangs on her wall. She's so chuffed. |
![]() |
| Chatterbox chose this one, it needs a frame though. |
![]() |
| Pretty, pretty cups. One is smaller than the other...not sure why, wonder if one is a coffee cup and one is a tea-cup? Written on the saucer it says, "Fashioned from the favourite pattern of Lord Francis Levenson-Gower, the first Duke of Ellesmere; a patron of the arts and a Knight of the Garter". |
![]() |
| A pretty china set. I didn't have time to lay it out properly, but you get the idea. :) |
![]() |
| Beautiful silver plated cutlery set. |
![]() |
| Oil lamp. Love it! Oh and the pretty crocheted mat. |
So, so happy. Such good memories and such pretty things.
Have a great week.
