The weather in my neck of the woods:
Chilly. It was -9C this morning. Our boiler pipe keeps freezing up. Squidge hates the cold and gets very upset if her feet get cold - she whinged and whined all the way round the village today.
One of my simple pleasures:

On my bedside table:
Far too many books. Including all listed here: I need to cull my book pile. I'm currently reading The Stripping of the Altars and Dulce Domum has said she's going to send me a copy of the sequel to Herb of Grace! Hurrah and huzzah!
On my TV:
Right now there's some mad battle going on between an animated 6 armed statue and Sinbad! It's the Golden Voyage of Sinbad. I'm also really into Dog Whisperer right now.
On the menu for tonight:
Steak pie, mash, sweetcorn and gravy. Gravy, oooh northern lasses looove graaavy.
On my To Do List:
Ironing
Wash windows (partly done, done the bedroom windows)
New Recipe I tried last week:
No new recipes.
In the craft basket:
Nowt.
Looking forward to:
Getting back into some kind of routine!
Homemaking Tip for this week:
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda onto carpets that have developed an odour from spills or other horrid events.

Three cheers for gravy!! "Whinged" - I love it, reminds me so much of my Mum - whinging, scriking/skriking (sp?) and raunging - those were three words she often used when referring to her granddaughter!
Minus 8 here this morning, so not much difference between north and south(ish) - though we are still waiting for the next lot of snow. Currently we have one of the thickest frosts I've seen. It looked stunningly beautiful driving through the countryside today.
I love, love, love The Herb of Grace. Enjoy the next book :). The Stripping of the Altars is good too. And that pie, mash and gravy sounds just the right comfort food for a cold winter's day.
ah, yes, I know about bored cats. Gretchen was not meant to be an indoor cat and she loves driving me crazy. I was off from work last week and nearly everyday starting at 12:30p sharp..."feed me, feed me, feed me". I about went nuts. :)

I think "Herb of Grace" must be the British title of the book I love as "Pilgim's Inn" by Elisabeth Goudge. The sequel, "The Heart of the Family" is good also. If I'm on the correct theme here, have you read the first book in the trilogy, published in US as "A Bird in the Tree"?
Just happened upon your blog today....are you possibly speaking of Elizabeth Goudge's book Herb of Grace?? I have long loved her books and have bought every one I could find. I love the Eliot family - they seem like people I really know.

Hi Pamela - skriking it's an Old Norse word, many dialect words in my neck of the woods are from Old Norse. It actually still means in Norwegian 'to cry, scream, shout or squeal'. I've not heard the expression raunging.

Hi Sarah; I'm backing up to this post to share that you've inspired me to dig out my Elizabeth Goudge books. Its been several years since I re-read them and this snow-cold January seems like a good time to do so. I thought to upgrade my paperback copies, but a visit to the Alibris site suggests I'm lucky to have them. Hardcovers are very pricey.
